Adjustable continence therapy works in a very simple way. Using a minimally-invasive procedure, two balloons are positioned each side of the tube that leads from your bladder for urination (the urethra). The exact placement depends on whether you are a woman or a man. The balloons are inflated with liquid, which makes them squeeze the urethra. This restores the pressure needed to urinate and protects against accidental leaking of urine when you cough, laugh or sneeze and so on. The amount of fluid in the balloons can easily be adjusted to exactly the right pressure for you.
The ACT system consists of two silicone balloons, each with a short length of silicone tubing through which the fluid to inflate the balloons can be passed. The tubing system is placed under the skin of the labia majora (the outer lips of the genitals).
The ProACT system consists of two silicone balloons, each with a length of silicone tubing through which the fluid to inflate the balloons can be passed. The tubing system is placed under the skin of the scrotum.
