After college I spent 4 years in Hong Kong, selling for a major pharmaceuticals company. Then I heard about an opportunity at Medtronic, a growing company with an excellent reputation in Asia. The managers I interviewed with exhibited a high level of integrity. It convinced me that this would be a great place to grow my career.

My first impression was exactly right. Medtronic has supported my career growth with increasing responsibilities, challenging assignments, and the training and support needed for me to be successful. I've learned a great deal from many experienced colleagues in Asia/Pacific and around the world. Last year I worked in Santa Rosa, Calif., for 4 months, broadening my understanding of the business and what it takes to succeed on a global scale.

Those experiences contributed to the success of my biggest project to date, launching the Endeavor® drug-eluting stent in Asia/Pacific. I received a Marketing Excellence Award for leading that project, but it wouldn't have been possible without the support of the entire Asia/Pacific Vascular team.

Joined Medtronic: 1997

Education:
University of British Columbia, bachelor's in Biochemistry
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, master's in Environmental Science

What I've learned about working with people from around the world:
You can work with people more effectively if you understand how they approach problems. Every person is unique, but I've noticed that Americans tend to be direct, open, concise, and good at encouraging creativity; Europeans are detail-oriented, plan well, and look for long-term solutions; while Asians are conservative, loyal, value consensus, and seek top-down direction.

My favorite book:
Every Business Is a Growth Business, by Ram Charan and Noel Tichy. I found new insights into making the impossible possible. It was very inspiring.
